    DESCRIPTION:
For drivers who know that too much automation can be a dangerous thing: The Rover 2000 Automatic. (It

s only automatic when you want it to be.)
It is more than an innate distrust of newfangled machinery that makes so many drivers leery of cars with automatic transmissions. It is also fear.
A good healthy reasonable fear of being helpless in adversity. The simple fact is that even the best machine has its bad moments — and when that happens it takes a human being to set it right, just as it took a human being to conceive it in the first place.
What if you're tooling along at today's turnpike limits and the brakes fail when you need to make a panic stop? Or, even if the brakes never fail, there are times — say on slick or icy roads — when you wouldn't dare hit them hard for fear of slipping into a skid or even flipping the car entirely. Under those circumstances, if you had a manual transmission, you could down-shift and use the gear box to brake your speed. But there's no denying that in the average car with automatic transmission, you'd be pretty helpless.
Then, there's the question of what to do when you floor the accelerator pedal in a tight spot and for some gremlin-inspired reason, it sticks. The manual-driver would down-shift. But, the best you could do in most automatics would be to shift into neutral, let the engine roar its heart out, and hope the other drivers around you catch on that you're in trouble.
You get the idea. Automation is great — but there are times when a little bit goes a long way.
When Rover engineers designed the 2000 Automatic they recognized that though people were
imperfect, machines weren't so damned foolproof either. So they compromised — and designed systems that would work both ways. Our automatic transmission also permits you to shift manually. As a matter of fact — shifting it is infinitely smoother, quicker, and simpler than with any purely manual transmission, partly because there is no clutch.
Like every Rover 2000, the Automatic was designed to help you avoid accidents whenever possible and to survive them when they can't be avoided.
In addition, it lets you do the driving whenever you get the mood or find yourself in a spot where your own judgment seems more trustworthy than that of a machine. In the continual stop and go of city traflic, when perpetual shifting is frankly a bore, you'll bless every little automated bone in its handsome body.
Other times, when you feel like throwing your weight around a little, you can make it just as manual as a needle and thread. So live a little — literally and figuratively. Come in or call your Rover dealer.
Ask to see the machine that will never replace a man.
P.S. If you'd like to study up on our two-way transmission before soloing in a 2000 Automatic, drop us a card with the words “automatic brochure please" and your name and address and we’ll send you a handy dandy booklet by return mail.
