There is no mistaking the Jaguar E-Type. Since its introduction in 1961, the XKE has remained one of the automotive world’s most endearing forms, with Enzo Ferrari declaring it “the most beautiful car in the world.” Its combination of sumptuous lines and splendid performance was like nothing else before, and it continues to be one of the most desirable models for collectors around the world.
This 1970 4.2L fixed head coupe shows all the beauty and refinement of the Series 2 cars, but with an upgraded Series 1 style tri-carb intake. The car had seen previous refurbishment work when purchased by its last owner in 1994. It had exactly 56,789 miles at that time; today it reads 60,235. Thus it has seen fewer than 3,500 miles in the last 28 years! This is all documented in the owner's notebook that shows every fuel fill-up during that time. A significant service in 2021 has ensured everything is mechanically sound and ready to go. The body is free of any rust problems and is very straight. The light blue paint is in wonderful condition and is such a nice color on this car. All the chrome and brightwork is also in good condition, and the classic Jaguar wire wheels have been fitted with two-ear spinners.
The original 4.2L block was removed and rebuilt. A big change was the intake conversion from two Zenith-Stromberg carburetors to the higher performance triple-SU setup. It has been properly tuned and really hums! The 4-speed transmission shifts properly and does not grind or pop out of gear. The rear end is also in good shape without any funny noises. Combining all this with 4-wheel disc brakes, fully independent suspension, and crisp manual steering gives a delightful driving experience unlike so many other cars from this era.
The black leather interior has a stock appearance with the exception of the radio. It is all in great condition including the seats, door panels, headliner, and carpet. The dash and instruments look amazing as does the gorgeous wooden steering wheel. The rear compartment is also in good condition and houses a correct spare wheel along with a jack and knockoff hammer. All gauges function properly as do the blower motor, wipers, horn, radio, and parking brake. The factory air conditioning is fully intact but void of refrigerant (R12).
This example, with its great bones, refurbishment work, and performance upgrades, really looks sharp and is a pleasure to drive. And we are not talking about somebody’s project car, weekend beater, or barn find here. Rather, this quality XKE is a beautiful turn-key specimen. It also includes an operating handbook, 1970 Jaguar literature, and judging sheets showing a total score of 96.26 points. More than 60 years after its introduction the E-Type remains a big hit wherever it goes. There is simply nothing else like it, before or since.
