Description
A great find and Oh so RARE in this condition!!! Would be a great Museum piece for a period display!Probably custom made by Salamansky J. Ca. Norfolk, Va.-label sewn into back of strap along with a handwritten name "E.S. Ruffin and date Nov. 5,04" (I believe "maybe" this is ?1804-base on style and penmanship). No size label so see measurements below. I would guess this vest would be a S/M?
Could this have belonged to Captain Edmund Ruffin who fired the first shot in the Civil War at Fort Sumter???? I am NO expert and have no documentation-I have done some research on the name and there is a plantation in Norfolk, Va. belonging to the Ruffin family located on Ruffin's Way. YOU be the judge -please ask questions-buying as is!
Has a U-shape collar with 4 ( 1 button has broken off base) cloth covered buttons and HANDMADE button holes-Imagine the time spent on this garment!! There are a couple of lightened areas on collar that I have not attempted to clean-leaving that to the lucky bidder! Also there are 2 areas on inside that are white in color ? not sure what cause these and same white on back below left shoulder. Please see pics.
There are 4 pockets on front for your pocket watch or compass!!
The back of vest has a sheen-I do believe this might be silk-no label confirming! There is a strap in back with a small buckle for adjusting.
Measurements (lying flat): shoulders-14 inches, armpit to armpit-18.5 inches, arm opening-10.5 inches from shoulder to armpit.
Perfect for a period costume, theatre or for Museum display!!
