Description
This is an original 1996 Brunswick Danger Zone. Not to be mistaken for the re-release "Brunswick Vintage" Danger Zone which, although a decent ball in it's own right, is still nothing compared to the original. The reason being that this one is made with Brunswick's original Powerkoil 18 coverstock before they began tweaking the formula (if it ain't broken don't fix it). Only a small handful of Brunswick ball models were ever made with it. The urethane formula that they call "Powerkoil" today is nothing like what it was in the '90's.I've thrown both the original DZ and the remake, the original is BY FAR the most powerful of the two. It reads the mids better, retains more energy down lane, breaks sooner but rolls out way smoother, and positively annihilates the deck. Absolutely nothing stands in it's way. The pins explode. The original DZ's coverstock creates so much pin action that it will still carry the corners on even the widest pocket hit or a shallow dive through the nose. On shots where any other ball would have left a ringing 9 or stubborn 5, the DZ does the opposite. It's a very forgiving ball due to Powerkoil 18's sheer kinetic energy retention all the way down lane. That's what made this ball so good back then, that's why it's still good now.
I am the second owner. I've never resurfaced it although it could probably stand to have one. Though I've never thought it necessary. I've thrown this ball every season I've had it across 4 different houses, doesn't disappoint. I once broke out this ball at a tournament and got laughed at for having dared to bring such an old ball to a regional event. After a set of 240's-230's-280-269 the laughter stopped and the uncomfortable silences began. That's the end of my story.
On medium to heavy conditions this ball excels. The only thing the Danger Zone doesn't like is burn up. If your house is notoriously on the dry side this may not be the right ball. If you're going up against someone who's on your line and their ball seems to be soaking up the oil then the DZ might have problems. Besides that there's nothing negative I can say about it. A solid piece that has withstood the changes over time and keeps up with modern performance needs.
Span on the current drill is 5" precisely, 1.5 drill, redrilled fingers only. Holes were expertly filled and are 100% crack free. A small 3/8" counterbalance hole is drilled at 90 degrees, beveled and 3.5 inches deep to remove approx. 1 oz. of coverstock material.
